Near the end of my first day past the wormhole, I had a chance to witness a celestial wonder I had heard about and seen photos of as a boy. It is such a thrill to be able to see this unique formation first hand. No one can miss the resemblance to an eyeball, and the Iridani, in one of the systems closest to it, have given it a name that translates as “the eye of God.” They are close enough to see it clearly defined in their night sky.
One astronomer has described this nebula as a “dying star throwing a cosmic tantrum.” Unlike the cosmic dust clouds that are the genesis of new stars, this one has a dying white dwarf at its core.
